Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sugar
Dissolves into the water to sweeten the punch and softens the icy texture.
Lemons
Provide acidity and fresh aroma that balance the sweetness.
Jamaica rum
Adds flavor and alcohol, which lowers the freezing point so the punch stays slushy.

The step that matters

Adding the rum at the half-frozen stage. Alcohol lowers the freezing point, so rum added too early keeps the mixture from freezing and it stays runny. Adding it after partial freezing lets ice crystals form first, giving a slushy texture.

Swap the lemon

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, rum):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Pineapplefits better
  3. Bananafits better

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, rum. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
