Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

American cheese
Melts into a soft, creamy interior that gives the croquette its flavor and body.
Egg
Binds the cheese mixture so the croquettes hold their shape.
Butter
Adds fat for a richer, smoother texture in the cheese filling.
Cracker dust
Forms a crisp, browned outer coating when fried.

The step that matters

Fry the croquettes in hot oil. The oil must be hot enough to brown the cracker coating quickly. If it is too cool, the croquettes absorb excess oil and the cheese may leak out before the crust sets.
