What each ingredient does

Leeks
Provide the tender, mildly sweet vegetable that is the main body of the dish.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, coating the leeks and soaking into the toast.
Dry toast
Acts as a crisp base that soaks up the melted butter and holds the leeks.

The step that matters

Boiling the leeks for 20 minutes. Leeks need enough time in boiling water to turn tender throughout. Undercooked leeks stay fibrous and tough, while overcooking makes them soft and watery.

Swap the leek

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Carrotfits about as well
