Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Macaroni
Forms the bulk of the dish and absorbs butter and sauce as its starch structure sets during cooking.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth mouthfeel to the drained macaroni.
Stewed tomatoes
Provide acidity and body to the sauce, balancing the savory gravy.
Leftover bones and trimmings
Release gelatin and flavour into the water, giving the sauce body and savoury depth.

The step that matters

Simmer the bone gravy until reduced. Reducing the liquid concentrates flavour and gelatin from the bones, so the sauce gains body instead of tasting thin and watery.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Carrotfits about as well
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
