Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Winter squash
Forms the body of the mash, and its starch thickens it as it softens and breaks down.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a smoother, silkier mouthfeel in the mashed squash.

The step that matters

Cook until very soft. Squash must be fully tender for its cell walls and starches to break down. Undercooked squash stays stiff and stringy, so the mash turns out lumpy and fibrous instead of smooth.

Swap the winter squash

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Lemonfits better
  2. Mangofits better
  3. Limefits better
  4. Winter squashthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
