Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Form the bulk of the dish and release juice that softens the layers as they bake.
Bread crumbs
Absorb tomato juice and give the layers a soft, set texture with a browned top.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the top crumbs brown in the oven.
Sugar
Balances the acidity of the tomatoes and adds a touch of sweetness.

The step that matters

Uncover to brown. Baking covered traps steam and keeps the top pale and moist. Uncovering for the final stretch lets surface moisture evaporate, so the crumbs and butter can brown.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, pepper, butter, bread):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits about as well
  3. Sweet potatofits about as well
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, pepper, butter, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
