Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main body and protein of the salad, cooked tender and then cut into pieces.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, helping the sauce feel smooth and creamy.
Flour
Thickens the cooking liquid into a creamy sauce that coats the chicken.
Butter lettuce
Adds a tender, crisp leaf texture that contrasts with the chicken.

The step that matters

Stir the butter and flour mixture into the skillet until it thickens. Flour must be fully mixed into the hot liquid and stirred continuously so starch swells and the sauce thickens smoothly without lumps.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, butter, flour, celery, pepper, lettuce):

  1. Tarragonfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Capersfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, butter, flour, celery, pepper, lettuce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
