Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Whites add airy foam and yolks thicken the drink into a rich, creamy body when heated.
Milk
Forms the liquid base and provides the creamy body of the drink.
Sugar
Adds sweetness that balances the richness of the eggs and brandy.
Brandy or whiskey
Adds warming flavour and aroma to the drink.
Nutmeg
Contributes a warm, spiced aroma.

The step that matters

Heat gently with constant stirring. The yolk proteins thicken the mixture as they warm. Too much heat or a pause in stirring can scramble the yolks into grainy curds.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, brandy, sugar, egg):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegthe original
  3. Gingerfits less well
  4. Clovefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, brandy, sugar, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
