What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main protein and bulk of the salad.
Celery
Adds crisp texture that contrasts with the soft chicken.
French dressing
Adds moisture, acidity and sweetness that coat the chicken and celery.

The step that matters

Mix with French dressing just before serving. Dressing added too early softens the celery and makes the salad watery as salt and acid draw moisture out of the vegetables. Mixing close to serving keeps the celery crisp and the texture pleasant.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, cream):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Celerythe original
  3. Tarragonfits about as well
  4. Nutmegfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
