Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Oysters
Provide the main flavor and tender texture of the soup.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, carrying flavor through the soup.
Cream
Adds richness and a smooth, velvety body to the soup.
Milk
Thins the soup and adds mild sweetness and body.
Flour
Thickens the soup slightly when creamed with butter and stirred in.

The step that matters

Remove from heat immediately. Oysters turn tough and rubbery when overcooked, so the soup should be taken off the heat as soon as it boils and the oysters are just curled.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (oyster, butter, pepper, cream, milk, flour, bread):

  1. Nutmegfits better
  2. Parsleyfits about as well
  3. Cinnamonfits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against oyster, butter, pepper, cream, milk, flour, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
