  2. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.

  3. Cut in lard.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Forms the dough's structure, which holds the beef filling inside the roll.
Baking powder
Releases gas during baking, so the dough rises and turns light and tender.
Lard
Cut into the flour to add fat, making the dough short and flaky.
Chopped beef
Forms the main filling, supplying savory flavor and substance.
Grated cheese
Melts over the loaf, adding richness and savory flavor.

The step that matters

Roll the dough up around the beef. If the dough is rolled too thick or unevenly, it bakes unevenly and the filling may not cook through. Keeping the roll snug and even helps the loaf bake uniformly.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, milk, beef, cheese):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Tomatofits about as well
  3. Chivefits about as well
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against flour, milk, beef, cheese. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
