What each ingredient does

Concord grapes
Provide the juice and the characteristic grape flavor of the drink.
Granulated sugar
Sweetens the juice and balances the grapes' natural tartness.

The step that matters

Adding the water. The water must be measured against the juice volume, as the recipe specifies. Too much water dilutes the grape flavor and sweetness, while too little leaves the drink overly concentrated and tart.
