Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bread crumbs
Soak up the milk and swell, thickening the sauce to a smooth body.
Milk
Forms the liquid base that the bread crumbs thicken as they absorb it.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a smoother, silkier mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Press through a sieve. Pressing the softened crumbs through a sieve breaks them into a fine, smooth texture. Skipping this leaves lumps and a grainy sauce.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, bread, onion, butter, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Garlicfits better
  3. Thymefits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, bread, onion, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
