Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main body, flavour and acidity of the soup.
Onion
Adds sweetness and savoury depth as it softens in the butter.
Butter
Carries flavour from the pot and adds richness to the soup.
Vegetable broth
Provides liquid that softens the tomatoes and forms the soup base.
Cream
Adds richness and a smoother, milder texture when stirred in.

The step that matters

Sauté the onion until translucent. Cooking the onion gently until it is translucent softens it and sweetens its flavour. Browning it too fast can make the soup taste harsh or bitter.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, butter, pepper, cream):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Leekfits better
  3. Chivefits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against onion, butter, pepper, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
