Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Barley
Swells as it cooks, adding body and a chewy texture to the broth.
Carrots
Add sweetness and color, and hold their shape through long simmering.
Flour
Thickens the broth as its starch swells with heat, giving it body.
Soup meat
Releases gelatin and flavor into the broth, especially from bone.

The step that matters

Stirring in the flour and water mixture. Flour added to hot liquid can clump if not first mixed smooth with water. Thorough stirring and a short boil let the starch swell evenly and fully thicken the soup.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (meat, barley, carrot, turnip, pepper, clove, flour):

  1. Leekfits better
  2. Parsnipfits better
  3. Arrowrootfits better
