Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Soup bone
Releases gelatin and flavor into the water as it simmers, giving the stock body and richness.
Butter
Browns the meat first, adding roasted, savory flavor to the finished stock.
Onion
Adds savory sweetness and aroma as it softens and flavors the broth.
Carrots
Contribute natural sweetness and aromatic flavor to the stock.

The step that matters

Browning the meat in butter. Browning triggers the Maillard reaction, which creates deeper, roasted flavors. Meat that is pale or steamed instead of browned gives a flatter, less savory stock.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, turnip, carrot, onion, celery, cabbage, clove):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Marjoramfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, turnip, carrot, onion, celery, cabbage, clove. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
