Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main bulk, body and flavour base of the sauce.
Cider vinegar
Adds acidity that sharpens flavour and helps preserve the sauce.
Brown sugar
Adds sweetness and depth, balancing the vinegar and spices.
Onions
Contribute savoury aroma and flavour as they cook down into the sauce.

The step that matters

Boil the mixture down. Reducing the sauce concentrates its flavour and thickens it as water evaporates. Stop too early and it stays thin; cook too long and it becomes overly dense and sticky.

Swap the onion
