Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Round beef
Forms the main body of the loaves and provides the meaty flavour and texture.
Eggs
Bind the mixture together and help it set firm as it bakes.
Soda crackers
Absorb moisture and help hold the loaves together while they bake.
Suet
Adds fat that keeps the loaves moist and rich during baking.

The step that matters

Allow to cool before slicing. Cooked meat and egg mixtures are still setting when hot, so cooling lets the proteins firm up and the loaves hold their shape when cut.

Swap the sage

The recipe marks sage as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, egg, butter, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Tarragonfits better
  3. Nutmegfits better
  4. Sagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, egg, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
