Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the meat that forms the body of the dish.
Liquid jelly
Sets firm as it cools, giving the dish its jellied structure and holding its shape.
Butter
Adds richness and moisture to the chopped chicken mixture.
Powdered mustard
Adds a sharp, pungent flavour that cuts through the richness of the chicken and jelly.

The step that matters

Briefly place the mold in hot water. A short dip loosens the jelly from the mold walls so it releases cleanly. Leaving it too long softens the jelly's surface and edges, which can make the unmolded shape collapse.

Swap the mustard

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, butter, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Onionfits better
  4. Mustardthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
