Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Whole chicken
Gives the broth its body and flavor while the meat becomes tender enough to shred.
Vegetables (carrots, celery, onions)
Add sweetness and aroma to the broth and soften during the final simmer.

The step that matters

Simmer gently after the boil. Once the pot boils, lowering the heat to a gentle simmer keeps the broth clear and the meat tender. A hard boil makes the broth cloudy and can toughen the meat.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, pepper, carrot, celery):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Tomatofits better
  3. Parsnipfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, pepper, carrot, celery. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
