Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Onions
Form the edible shell that softens and turns sweet as it cooks.
Bread crumbs
Absorb moisture and bind the stuffing so it holds its shape in the onion.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, and helps the tops brown.

The step that matters

Cover and cook with a small amount of water. Covered, the water turns to steam that softens the onions evenly. Too little water can scorch the bottom of the pan before the onions are tender, and the cooking liquid should not be allowed to boil away.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (bread, pepper, butter):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Tomatofits better
  3. Potatofits about as well
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against bread, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
