Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Round beef
Provides the main meat that becomes tender during long, gentle simmering.
Stewed tomato
Adds acidity and body to the cooking liquid, flavouring the gravy.
Butter
Adds fat and richness to the finished gravy, giving it a smoother mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Simmer gently for 3 hours. Long, gentle heat breaks down the tough connective tissue in round beef into gelatin. A hard boil toughens and dries the meat, so the liquid should only simmer.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, pepper, butter):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Onionfits about as well
  3. Capsicumfits about as well
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
