Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Whole flaxseed
Releases soluble mucilage into the hot water, giving the lemonade a slightly thick, body-rich texture.
Sugar
Adds sweetness that balances the tartness of the lemon juice.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity and bright citrus flavor that cuts through the sweetness.

The step that matters

Steep for 1 hour. Flaxseed releases its mucilage slowly into the hot water. Steeping for the full hour lets enough of it dissolve to thicken the drink; a shorter steep gives a thinner result.

Swap the flaxseed

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, lemon):

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, lemon. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
