Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Grated cheese
Melts and browns on top, providing savoury richness and binding the mixture together.
Bread crumbs
Absorb moisture and give the roast a soft, light body that holds its shape.
Chopped nuts
Add crunch and fat, contrasting with the soft cheese and crumbs.
Butter or drippings
Adds fat and flavour to the onion and helps it soften evenly.

The step that matters

Cook the onion until tender. Raw onion stays sharp and firm during baking, while onion cooked in fat and a little water becomes sweet and soft, blending evenly into the roast.

Swap the nuts

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cheese, butter, bread, lemon, onion, pepper):

  1. Beansfits better
  2. Chickpeafits better
  3. Sesamefits better
  4. Nutsthe original
