Serve

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Macaroni
Forms the starchy base that the sauce coats and holds.
Tomatoes
Supply the main body, acidity and liquid of the sauce.
Lard
Adds fat and richness to the sauce.
Grated cheese
Adds savory flavor and a salty, rich note to the pasta.
Onion
Adds aromatic sweetness and depth to the sauce.

The step that matters

Simmering the sauce slowly for 2 hours. Long, gentle simmering lets the tomatoes break down and thicken while mellowing their acidity. Too hot a heat can scorch the sauce on the bottom, so stirring and adding water when it dries out keeps it smooth.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cheese, tomato, pepper, parsley, egg):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Carrotfits better
