Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Black beans
Form the body of the soup, breaking down into a thick pulp when boiled until soft.
Hard boiled eggs
Add substance and mild richness as sliced pieces in the finished soup.
Butter
Adds fat for a rounder, smoother mouthfeel and richer flavor.

The step that matters

Boil until the beans are thoroughly soft. Beans must be fully cooked to become tender and to break down into a smooth pulp when rinsed through a colander. Undercooked beans stay firm and grainy, and the soup will not thicken properly.

Swap the beans

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (thyme, egg, butter, pepper):

  1. Walnutfits better
  2. Chestnutfits about as well
  3. Black-eyed peafits about as well
  4. Beansthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against thyme, egg, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
