Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Forms the bulk of the salad and provides its protein and main texture.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that brightens the flavour and gently firms the surface of the meat.
Celery
Adds crisp texture and fresh, slightly salty crunch that contrasts with the soft chicken.
Mayonnaise dressing
Adds fat and moisture, binding the salad and keeping it creamy.

The step that matters

Chilling the chicken after marinating. Refrigerating for 2 to 3 hours lets the vinegar, oil, and seasonings penetrate the chicken so the flavour is evenly distributed. Keeping the celery separately chilled until serving preserves its crispness.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, vinegar, pepper):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Tarragonfits better
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, vinegar, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
