Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Egg yolks
Enrich the batter and help it set and brown when fried.
Flour
Forms the batter structure that coats each apple slice and crisps when fried.
Apples
Provide the main body and fruity flavour of the fritter.
Melted butter
Adds richness and tenderness to the batter.

The step that matters

Frying the batter-coated slices. The fat must be hot enough that the batter sets and turns golden quickly; if the fat is too cool, the batter absorbs oil and becomes greasy while the apple softens unevenly.
