Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rabbits
Provide the main meat flavor and body of the soup.
Lean lamb
Adds rich meaty flavor to the stock as it browns and stews.
Lean beef
Adds savory depth and gelatin-rich body to the long-simmered broth.
Onions
Browned in butter, they add sweetness and aroma to the base.

The step that matters

Fry the lamb, onions, and rabbits in butter until light brown. Browning builds deep flavor through the Maillard reaction. Pale frying yields a flatter, less savory broth, while over-browning can scorch the butter and make the soup bitter.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rabbit, lamb, onion, beef, bread, butter, pepper):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against rabbit, lamb, onion, beef, bread, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
