Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides the meat flavour and body that gives the gravy its richness during long simmering.
Butter
Adds fat that carries flavour and helps the vegetables brown in the pan.
Bacon
Releases smoky fat into the pan that seasons the beef and vegetables from the bottom up.
Onion
Browns and releases sweetness and aroma that deepen the savoury base of the gravy.

The step that matters

Browning the mixture over heat. Shaking the pan keeps the beef and vegetables from sticking and scorching, while browning builds deep savoury flavour through the Maillard reaction.
