Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Live crabs
Provide the main meat and the shell fat that flavours the gravy.
Flour
Dusts the crabs so they brown and help thicken the gravy.
Butter
Fries the crabs and forms the base of the gravy, adding richness and browning.
Cream
Makes the gravy smooth and rich, adding body and mild sweetness.

The step that matters

Fry the crabs in butter until cooked. Crab meat turns from translucent to opaque and firm as it cooks. Stopping too early leaves it raw, while overcooking makes it tough and dry.

Swap the parsley

The recipe marks parsley as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (crab, pepper, flour, butter, cream):

  1. Nutmegfits better
  2. Parsleythe original
  3. Tarragonfits about as well
  4. Capersfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against crab, pepper, flour, butter, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
