What each ingredient does

Fruit
Provides the main body and flavor of the preserve.
Sugar
Sweetens the syrup and helps preserve the fruit's texture and flavor.

The step that matters

Sealing the cans in boiling water. Cans must be heated in boiling water long enough to seal fully. Incomplete heating leaves air or microbes inside, so the contents may not keep.
