What each ingredient does

Whortle berries
Provide the main fruit body and flavor of the jam.
Sugar
Sweetens the jam and, when boiled into syrup, thickens it as water evaporates.

The step that matters

Boil the syrup until it thickens. Sugar syrup must be reduced enough to thicken properly. Boiling off water concentrates the sugar, so the jam sets as it cools rather than staying runny.
