Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Forms the main body of the dish, becoming tender as it simmers slowly.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, helping the meat brown in the kettle.
Flour
Coats the meat so it browns well and helps form a light crust.
Potatoes
Absorb cooking juices from the kettle and become tender while the meat finishes.

The step that matters

Brown the meat on all sides quickly. Searing the surface over medium heat creates browned flavor through the Maillard reaction. Turning it evenly prevents scorching and uneven color, while the flour coating helps the surface brown.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, butter, flour, pepper):

  1. Potatothe original
