Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main body and protein of the salad.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that brightens the dressing and flavours the chicken.
Oil
Carries flavour and adds moisture and richness to the chicken.
Celery
Adds crunch and a fresh, crisp texture against the soft chicken.

The step that matters

Refrigerating the chicken in the dressing. Marinating cold chicken in vinegar and oil for 2–3 hours lets the acid and fat penetrate the meat so it tastes seasoned throughout, not just on the surface. Keeping it cold also keeps the salad safe to hold before serving.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (vinegar, pepper, chicken):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Tarragonfits better
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against vinegar, pepper, chicken. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
