  3. Add enough water to cover the fish, then add a little pepper and salt.

  4. Top with the rolled butter and flour.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Fish
Forms the main body of the dish, cooked gently by baking in water.
Light bread crumbs
Absorb butter and juices to form a moist stuffing that holds its shape.
Butter
Adds richness and moisture, and helps the top brown as it melts.
Celery seeds
Add a warm, aromatic flavour to the stuffing.

The step that matters

Basting frequently while baking. Regular basting keeps the surface moist and carries heat over the fish, so it cooks evenly without drying out before it is done.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (fish, bread, pepper, celery, butter, walnut, egg):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Lettucefits better
  3. Asparagusfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against fish, bread, pepper, celery, butter, walnut, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
