Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cabbage
Forms the bulk of the dish, and boiling softens its fibers until tender.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a rounded, savory flavor that coats the cabbage.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that brightens the buttery flavor and sharpens the sweetness of the cabbage.

The step that matters

Drain the cabbage well. Excess water left on the cabbage dilutes the butter and vinegar, so the seasoning does not cling and the dish turns watery.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (vinegar, pepper, butter):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Mustardfits better
  3. Cabbagethe original
  4. Onionfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against vinegar, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
