Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a quick oven”. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

Assemble

  1. Layer sliced tomatoes in the bottom of a baking dish.

  2. Add a layer of bread crumbs and sprinkle with coarse sea salt and black pepper.

  3. Repeat layers until the dish is full, finishing with bread crumbs on top.

  4. Dot the top with bits of butter.

Bake and serve

  1. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20 minutes.

  2. Serve in the baking dish.
