What each ingredient does

Rice
Forms the main body of the dish, absorbing water to become tender and fluffy.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, coating the grains for a softer, glossier texture.

The step that matters

Simmering until the water evaporates. Once the water is gone, the rice can scorch on the bottom of the pot. Removing the cover and watching closely lets surface moisture escape so the grains dry and separate instead of turning gummy or burnt.
