What each ingredient does

Rice
Forms the body of the dish as its starch gelatinizes and softens during boiling.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, coating the grains and carrying flavor.

The step that matters

Simmering until the water evaporates. Once the grains have absorbed the water, continued heat can scorch the bottom or leave the rice unevenly cooked. Watching for the point where the water is gone and the rice is dry keeps the grains separate and fully tender.
