Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Stock
Forms the liquid base that carries the flavour of the whole soup.
Turnips
Soften during stewing and add body to the strained soup.
Carrots
Add sweetness and, once pulped, thicken the soup to a creamy texture.
Onions
Release sweetness and aroma as they stew in the stock.

The step that matters

Mixing in the pulped carrot. Carrot pulp thickens the soup quickly, so it should be stirred in gradually while the soup is hot. Adding it all at once can leave lumps or an uneven, overly thick texture that is hard to correct.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (turnip, carrot):

  1. Parsnipfits better
  2. Leekfits better
  3. Beetrootfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against turnip, carrot. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
