Why it works: Bread and butter are a kitchen classic. They rank in the top 7% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 27,232 recipes. Both carry delta-decalactone, which smells sweet, creamy. The science ↓
Timball of Macaroni
Ingredients
Directions
The book says “a warm oven”. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.
Roll the puff pastry very thin and cut it into narrow bands.
Twist each band into a cord and coil it around the insides of small buttered moulds.
Fill each mould with cooked macaroni.
Cover the top with equal quantities of grated bread and good fat cheese.
Bake in a warm oven at 400°F (200°C) for 45 minutes.
Turn them out onto a dish and serve.
Transcribed from a scanned cookbook and modernised for today's kitchens. Where the book gave no heat or time, or said "a moderate oven", the temperatures and times here may be modern equivalents rather than the book's own figures.
