Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sugar
Dissolves into the syrup that sweetens the fruit and helps keep it moist.
Bananas
Add soft texture and sweetness, but they brown quickly once cut, so they are added last.
Pineapples
Contribute juicy texture and tangy sweetness to the fruit mixture.
Oranges
Add juice, bright acidity and sweetness to the fruit mixture.

The step that matters

Add bananas just before serving. Cut banana flesh oxidises and turns brown when exposed to air, so adding it late keeps it looking fresh and avoids a soft, discoloured fruit cocktail.

Swap the grapefruit

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pineapple, orange, banana, sugar, rum):
