Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Remove the meat from a boiled chicken and cut it into 1-inch pieces.

  2. Wash and scrape the celery, then soak it in cold water to make it crisp.

  3. Dry the celery thoroughly and cut it into pieces about the same size as the chicken.

  4. Use about ¾ as much celery as chicken.

Assemble and garnish

  1. Mix the chicken and celery together and moisten with mayonnaise dressing.

  2. Arrange on a dish, shape nicely, and cover with more dressing.

  3. Garnish with white celery leaves, slices of hard‑boiled egg, and sprinkle capers on top.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Forms the main body of the salad and supplies its substantial, meaty texture.
Celery
Adds crisp texture and a fresh, mild crunch that contrasts with the soft chicken.
Mayonnaise dressing
Adds fat and moisture, binding the chicken and celery and keeping the salad creamy.

The step that matters

Dry the celery thoroughly. Celery soaked to crispness holds surface water; if not dried well, that water thins the mayonnaise dressing and makes the salad watery and loose.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, egg, capers):

  1. Tarragonfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Garlicfits better
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, egg, capers. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
