Chester Molasses Cake

Oven, in the book's wordsA hot oven

Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a hot oven”. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. In a bowl, combine lard, salt, and 2 cups of flour.

  2. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and add to the mixture.

  3. Let the mixture stand overnight.

  4. The next morning, add enough flour to make a stiff dough.

  5. Roll out the dough to ½-inch thick.

  6. Bake in a hot oven at 400°F (200°C) until done.
