Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Boil 1 pint of water in a stewpan.

  2. In a basin, mix 2 teaspoons of patent groats with 2 tablespoons of cold water to form a smooth paste.

Cook and finish

  1. Once the water is boiling, pour in the groat mixture and stir well with a wooden spoon.

  2. Cook for 10 minutes, ensuring it remains smooth and lump-free.

  3. Pour the gruel into a basin and stir in the butter and sugar to taste.

  4. If desired, add ⅓ cup of rum, unless the patient is feverish.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Patent groats
Thicken the water into a smooth, porridge-like gruel as they cook.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth, mellow mouthfeel to the finished gruel.
Rum
Adds a warming aroma and flavour to the gruel.

The step that matters

Mixing the groats into a paste before adding them to the boiling water. Stirring the groats with cold water first keeps them dispersed, so they do not clump into lumps when they meet the hot water and begin to thicken.

Swap the chestnut

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, rum):

  1. Almondfits better
  2. Pecansfits better
  3. Chestnutthe original
  4. Walnutfits about as well
