  1. Heat 1 pint of milk in a double boiler.

  2. In a separate pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and stir in 1 tablespoon of flour and ¼ teaspoon of salt.

  3. Add 1 tablespoon of warm milk to the butter‑flour mixture and stir until smooth.

  4. When the milk boils, slowly add the butter‑flour mixture while stirring constantly until thickened.

  5. Set the thickened milk mixture at the back of the stove.

Assemble and serve

  1. Toast 5‑6 slices of bread and butter them while hot.

  2. Dip each slice of bread into the thickened milk until softened, then place in a hot dish.

  3. Pour the remaining milk over the bread and serve immediately.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Thickens the milk into a smooth, light sauce as it cooks with the butter.
Butter
Forms a roux with the flour and adds richness to the sauce and toast.
Milk
Forms the body of the sauce that softens the toasted bread.

The step that matters

Adding the butter‑flour mixture to the boiling milk. Flour thickens only when its starch granules are dispersed and heated. Adding the paste slowly while stirring constantly prevents lumps, which form when starch clumps in hot liquid.
