Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main body and meaty texture of the salad.
Celery
Adds crisp texture and a fresh, mild crunch against the soft chicken.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that brightens the flavour and helps season the chicken during marinating.
Oil
Carries flavour in the dressing and keeps the chicken moist.
Mayonnaise sauce
Binds the salad and adds richness and creaminess.

The step that matters

Marinating the chicken and celery. Acidic dressing needs time to penetrate the meat and celery. Marinating for 1–2 hours lets the flavours soak in, but leaving it too long can make the chicken and celery soft and mushy.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, vinegar, pepper, mustard, sauce, capers, egg):

  1. Tarragonfits better
  2. Dillfits better
  3. Parsleyfits better
