To Make Coffee
for each personIngredients
Directions
For each person, use 1 quart of cold water and 1 heaping tablespoon of ground coffee.
Boil the water, then add the coffee and boil for 10 minutes.
Remove from heat and let it settle for 10 minutes before serving.
If boiling too fast, add 1 cup of cold water to prevent it from boiling over.
For larger quantities, use 6-7 quarts of water for 5 quarts of coffee, allowing for evaporation.
Simmer the coffee for 30 minutes on hot ashes, then keep it warm until ready to serve.
Add a third cup of cold water to clarify the coffee.

What each ingredient does
- Ground coffee
- Provides the flavor compounds that the hot water extracts into the drink.
- Cold water
- Acts as the solvent that draws flavor out of the grounds during boiling.
The step that matters
Let the coffee settle before serving. Grounds stay suspended while the liquid is hot and moving. Letting it rest lets them sink, so pouring carefully avoids a cloudy, gritty cup.
