Why it works: Bread and butter are a kitchen classic. They rank in the top 7% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 27,232 recipes. Both carry delta-decalactone, which smells sweet, creamy. The science ↓
Stuffed Baked Tomatoes
Ingredients
Directions
The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.
Prepare
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Cut a thin slice from the blossom end of each tomato and set aside.
Scoop out the insides of the tomatoes and chop them finely.
Stuff and bake
Mix the chopped tomato insides with grated bread crumbs, coarse sea salt, black pepper, and a little butter.
Stuff the mixture back into the tomatoes and fit the tops on neatly.
Place the stuffed tomatoes in a deep dish and bake for 45 minutes until light brown.
If any stuffing is left, fill the spaces between the tomatoes with it.
Transcribed from a scanned cookbook and modernised for today's kitchens. Where the book gave no heat or time, or said "a moderate oven", the temperatures and times here may be modern equivalents rather than the book's own figures.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Large smooth tomatoes
- Hollowed out to hold the stuffing, and their flesh softens and moistens as they bake.
- Grated bread crumbs
- Absorb tomato juice and bind the stuffing so it holds its shape.
- Butter
- Adds richness and fat, helping the top brown lightly in the oven.
The step that matters
Baking until light brown. Tomatoes hold a lot of water, so baking too long can collapse them and make the stuffing soggy. Checking for a light golden top keeps the shells intact and the filling moist.
Swap the tomato
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (bread, pepper, butter):
- Capsicumfits better
- Tomatothe original
- Potatofits about as well
- Asparagusfits about as well
Fit is the average pairing score against bread, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
